How to Lose Friends, Irritate Everyone and Lose Sales in the Process, by Ken McVay

There’s a chap in Florida that markets himself as “the Master of Internet Prospecting.” He is a good mentor, he provides a good product, his training videos are concise and complete, and his websites convert well. I know these things because I paid the man $200 for one of his video courses so I could learn how to use social networking sites for developing prospects. |
I was, and am, fully satisfied with the product I purchased, although I quickly discovered that things weren’t quite as simple as this “guru” led me to believe.
I got my money’s worth, but he will never get another penny.
“Ouch!” you say? What’s wrong with this picture? How did this man move me from “completely satisfied customer” to “irritated victim?”
One of the products this man provides is a daily motivation site which uses a scheduled autoresponder to send subscribers a daily motivational message. This message, with copyright information included, can then be used to keep your name in front of all of your social networking “friends.” The motivational messages are free, and may be freely republished, so long as you include the copyright data.
I use them every day on MySpace, where I have more than 4,000 friends. I know - because many of them tell me - that everyone enjoys reading these inspirational messages. In fact, many of my MySpace friends pass these messages on to their friends, where they act as a viral marketing tool for their author.
That’s neat, and I’m grateful to have this service. I get free value, he builds a viral market.
Alas, once you’ve subscribed to these “daily motivations,” you become a target for seemingly endless sales pitches for this or that training course. How endless? On one memorable day, I received more than six of this man’s pitches! As if that weren’t annoying enough, I also get the same messages from the scheduled autoresponder he uses to maintain contact with his paying clients.
So, Instead of SIX sales pitches that memorable day, I got THIRTEEN! Perhaps you begin to understand why this man is unlikely to get another penny out of me. He abuses the trust his subscribers place in him and overloads them with spam. I am not going to reward his poor judgment by giving him more money, and neither should you.
I bought my original course in February of 2008, so I have been receiving this man’s marketing barrage for more than a year. During that time, I have made some interesting observations. He does long run-ups to promote his training programs… I hear about them for a month or more before the actual date arrives. He always includes testimonials, which is good marketing practice, but I rarely find them convincing. They seem just a bit too self-serving to me, and the irritation I feel at receiving one or two pitches from the man every day diminish the credibility of his message.
He also - always - warns that the class is about to sell out, then, at the last moment, he describes some sort of “mistake” that forces him to offer “just one or two more seats” to - you guessed it - the same weary targets.
“My server crashed during the final moments of sign ups,” or “My son made a mistake and may have deleted some of our late sign ups,” or “Our credit card processor’s software failed at a critical point, and your orders may have been lost.” You get the idea… Every single ad campaign for every single course includes one of these “disasters” that “force” him to re-open registration, “just in case we missed your order.”
I subscribe to a good many mailing lists. Most of them are quite valuable, and none of them, with the singular exception of “the Master of Internet Prospecting,” abuse the privilege I have granted of being welcome to access my Inbox whenever they wish, and that leads us to the point of this exercise.
Every single one of them provides me with valuable free information, and every single one of them wants to sell me something. I know that, and they know I know, and it works. It works because everyone wins.
When I get mail from Frank Kern, Mike Dillard, Tim & Anthony Buchalka, Anik Singal, Brent Hodgson or Steve Clayton, I read it.
I’m a big fan of Mike Dillard’s “Magnetic Sponsoring,” and those of you who have read Mike’s powerful book already understand why I axed “the Master of Internet Prospecting” from my reading list, while I continue to read Kern, Clayton, Mike Dillard and the others.
Mike Dillard is representative of them all. He does not contact me on a daily basis. When he does, he gives me valuable free advice long before he adds a sales message. That advice is so valuable that I recommend Mike’s newsletters to anyone, whether they ever intend to buy his products or not. Frank Kern and the others are the same. They offer real value, and they treat their readers with respect. In return, they generate sales, over and over again.
The guys who “get it” provide me with value whether I buy from them or not (I often do… that’s a clue!) They help me improve my marketing skills, obtain better Page Rankings on Google, and maximize my income. They never, ever, insult my intelligence, and they never, ever, flood my Inbox with garbage. When they ask me for my money, I often give it to them, and when I don’t, it isn’t because they’re annoying me, it’s because my monthly budget has been exhausted.
They never seem to suffer those nagging problems “the Master of Internet Prospecting” seems to encounter on a regular basis.
Frankly, I think “the Master of Internet Prospecting” should get a copy of “Magnetic Sponsoring” and discover why I don’t read his email any more.

I don’t see things the way I used to. Mike Dillard’s “Magnetic Sponsoring” has seen to that. When friends used to send me email about some “pre-launch opportunity I just had to get in on, I’d always try to find time to look at whatever it was they were promoting. Sometimes, I’d even do as they suggested and “get in at the top.” Sometimes I’d make a few bucks… sometimes, it might be a few thousand. In the end, however, these “get in at the top” deals all faded into a well deserved obscurity, and left me wondering where the next mortgage payment was coming from. |
After more years on this Merry-Go-Round than I’ll admit to, one of my newsletter readers sent me a note about Mike Dillard’s Magnetic Sponsoring. He added that Mike was offering some free training, and said, “Don’t bother buying the book - just read the man’s newsletters and grab the free training.”
I won’t recap what happened, except to reiterate what I said in my opening salvo: I don’t see things the way I used to.
I can tell you this - my friend was dead wrong. Looking back, I wish he’d told me to buy Magnetic Sponsoring. He could have saved me years of pointless “marketing” grief. I’m sure he never read the book or took one of Mike Dillard’s courses; he was simply doing a bit of low grade affiliate marketing.
I never heard from the guy again, which goes to show you how foolish some “wannabe” marketers can be. He should have bought the book – if he had, he’d be making money now instead of wondering why he couldn’t make a living online.
Mike Dillard changed the way I look at things… I devote a lot of time to social networking, primarily on MySpace, where you’ll find me as “Island Roamer.” I have accumulated a Friends List of thousands of people, and, true to Magnetic Sponsoring tenents, I don’t waste time trying to sell them lotions and potions. The truth is that the only thing I try to sell them is ME.
I send them a daily motivational bulletin which includes a link to one of my blogs, so that they can get to know who I am and what I believe, and my Profile clearly identifies me as a network marketer.
Every day, without fail, one or two of these MySpace “Friends” will send me a note… you guessed it… offering me a chance to “get in ahead of the herd” with whatever fantasy opportunity they’re flogging this month. They’re always “in at the top,” and they’re always set to make a fortune. Their downlines are “exploding,” and the downpayment on their beach front condo will arrive any day now. (Hey, if their downlines are exploding, how can anyone “get in at the top?”)
When I get these invitations - blatant commercial pitches - there’s a near-instant realization that the sender isn’t successful, isn’t making any money, and doesn’t know how to change. It’s certain that I’ll hear from them again in a month or two with another invitation to “get in at the top.”
I don’t think it, I KNOW it.
How? Because they haven’t even tried to offer me value - they just pitch their “amazing, once in a lifetime deal” because they know I’m a marketer and they assume I’m as poorly prepared for my craft as they are. If they had a clue what they were doing, they’d have introduced themselves, shown some interest in ME, and offered some solid free advice. Instead, although they don’t know it, they’ve blown their cover and revealed themselves as failures.
Been there, done that, got the credit card bills to prove it. (I couldn’t afford the t-shirts.)
I don’t have time for that crap. I don’t have time for people whose only interest in me is whatever they can take from me before their “business opportunity” falls apart.
They don’t introduce themselves, they don’t prove their value, they don’t offer to train and support me, they just say “buy this, buy that” and move on to their next victim.
Sure, they mean well, and they think they’re doing things the “right way,” and I’d bet they haven’t a clue why they aren’t making any more money this year than they did last year.
I’d tell them about Mike Dillard, if they’d only ask, but they don’t, and so I simply cut them lose and write them off.
Give me a break! They aren’t the kind of folks I want to do business with.
The bottom line? If you haven’t read Mike Dillard’s “Magnetic Sponsoring,” we aren’t going to be doing business together any time soon. I need people on my team who know and understand the principles Mike teaches, and I won’t accept anything less.
Yes, I’m serious about that. If you aren’t one of Mike’s students, I don’t want you on my team.
Unlike my anonymous “friend” who told me to read Mike’s newsletter and “not waste my money buying the book,” I’m going to tell you, right up front, to get off the sofa and get Magnetic Sponsoring now, because I know something you don’t: If you take my advice, the day will come when you’ll thank me.
Thanks, Mike.
How to Choose the Best Domain Name For Your Business By Mike Dillard
Filed Under (Dillard Mike, Mike Dillard) by admin on 18-03-2009
Tagged Under : choosing a domain name, Mike Dillard
BuildYourOwnMLM.com |
Choosing your own domain name is very important and can be critical to your success as a network marketer. Take your time and choose the right one.
Why is it important for you to choose a domain name you are happy with? You need to realize that once you start your business and/or have a lot of customers you will not be able to change your domain name. If you do you will lose all of the advertising exposure for the previous domain name and you will look unprofessional to all your customers. To set up a domain name you need to find a domain hosting company. There are plenty of hosting companies you can find on the internet and buying your own domain name is not very expensive. You can usually buy domains for $5-$10 a piece, per year. |
“Mike’s domain registration rules:” Rule #1: keep it simple. You want to find a domain name that is easy to say, easy to spell, and easy to remember. This is not optional. If you can’t find an address that fits all three of these qualifications, keep looking.
If you are giving your website address to someone over the phone or to a group on a conference call, there can be no room for misinterpretation or spelling errors which means you need to follow the next piece of advice.
Rule #2: Register plural and hyphenated versions. You want to register all plural and hyphened versions of your domain name of choice in order to capture anyone who might misspell the name, and to protect yourself from competition who will intentionally register any domains similar to yours.
Now this is not going to matter much if you are just a tiny fish in the big internet pond and you are aren’t promoting yourself in a massive way. But if you ever start to brand yourself and that domain name, then you need to follow these suggestions.
I recently started a project on creating lead generating capture pages, so the very first thing I did was register several possible domain names for it. (The hyphened and plural versions of each name).
Do not leave a door wide open for a competitor to leech visitors and customers through a similar domain name. You can bet that if I had not registered a hyphenated version of my domain name right after registering my real domain name a cyber squatter would have bought it and would have then owned a very valuable piece of internet real estate. (And he’d probably have a law-suit on his hands).
Always remember that entrepreneurs are opportunistic people by nature. Just do it right the first time and you won’t have to worry about any of these issues.
Rule #3: Use the top “key words” In the domain itself. (But not every time. I will explain why in Rule #5). Search engines give high relevance to sites with top key words in the domain name itself, and a higher relevance for .com names over any of the other extensions like .net .biz . org or .info.
So how do you find the right key words to use? Head to a search engine and go to the resources page for current advertisers, and click on the link for key word selector tool. (Most, but not all, search engines have a tool like this).
Type in a common search term for your category or product or service. Example: If I type “capture pages,” it brings back the following results: The top result is “lead capture pages,” so I would want to try and register something with the words “lead” and “capture,” right in the domain name itself.
NOTE: If the .com version of your preferred domain is unavailable, choose another. You want to have the .com address, because that is what your visitors will automatically type in when going by memory. And if they do not, many will type it in just out of curiosity, and if it is owned by a competitor, you are in trouble.
Rule #4: pay attention to phonics when purchasing a domain name. Try not to use numbers unless you can purchase both the numerical and alphabetical names. If you can find a domain name with both listings available, then go for it.
Rule #5: Register a “generic” domain name that can be used to promote anything now and in the future. Choosing a generic domain name can be very important when generating leads if you are a network marketer. 99% of the time, you do not want to have the name of your company or product in the domain name because your capture page is not going to be promoting your company, it will be promoting you or your business team.
Why? Because I want to keep control of what my prospects see and when. I want to keep control of the presentation of my business and the timeline in which it takes place. My prospect does not know what company I am with until I tell them. They cannot look at my network marketing opportunity website until I give it to them.
Most network marketers will register a domain name with their company name in it, but what if you change companies? What if you decide to leave your vitamin company and decided to sell products for another natural health company? What are you going to do with an email address (that everyone now knows, with your company name in it) when you change companies?
That is why you always register a generic domain name to use for your email correspondence that you can keep forever, no matter what kind of business you decide to build.
I chose a very generic domain name for my first website for this reason: Once you have a generic domain, you can always register another one for your specific opportunity that you can give to your prospects when the time is right. I have purchased over 100 domains in the last year alone. It is like owning cyber real estate.
This is probably going to be a very frustrating process for you if this is your first time
registering a domain name. Why? Because you will soon find out that 19 out of 20 domain names you think of will already be taken. Coming up with something generic is pretty easy though.
Here are a few ideas: Use your name in combination with an extension, like “LLC” or “Inc.” Think of a company name, or “Doing Business As”, name. Once again, keep these three rules in mind; easy to say, easy to spell, and easy to remember. If your last name happens to be Leibowitz, then pick something else!
Rule #6: You want to buy the .com, net, and .biz versions of each domain you choose. When coming out with a new product I might end up buying a total of 15 a domain names: each with a different “.” ending.
You get the idea. Purchasing this many domain names for one project is not necessary, just recommended. So go ahead and make your purchase, but do not buy any of the other services your registration company will want to sell you like traffic generation, search engine submission, etc. You do not need those.
All you need are the domain names, and a basic hosting account which you can set up with any of the many hosting companies.
Start with the domain search box. You will get to know this one well as you search for a name that is actually available. Continue to search until you find a name that meets all of the criteria we have discussed today.
Once you find a name that works, choose to register the .com, .biz, and .info names. Go ahead and start the check out process. Skip all of the extra services they will try and sell you. You do not need them.
I only register my domains for one year at a time to keep costs down. They will automatically renew each year as long as your credit card on file is current. If it is not, your hosting company will notify you.
Congrats! You now own your very first domain name!

Top 5 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself About Network Marketing By Mike Dillard

In order to find out if you are running your business as efficiently and successfully as possible I came up with five questions for you. I ask you these five questions so you can assess whether or not you own a professional or amateur network marketing business.
1. How would you describe your lead generation and your conversion process for your network marketing or on-line business? If you, alone, by word of mouth are the only thing in your business generating leads, than I have old news for you, you aren’t making much money. |
One step up from that might be a business with a couple different lead sources, but the leads are still all generated with people. This business is on the right path, but they are still losing a lot of money, by professional standards. Automated will always be easier and faster than manual.
How does a professional do it? Well you should always have over five consistent, predictable, and profitable lead sources, most of which are automated.
Your conversion rate should be 80%, and most of those sales are automated, requiring little of your actual time. I want you to take a calculator out and figure out how much monthly income you could make if you were converting 80% of your leads into sales because you should be!
2. Once you have acquired a customer, how many different products and services do you have to offer them? If you only have one product or service to offer somebody, how are you going to create a repeat customer?
If you have between 2 and 10 products to offer them you are doing a little better, but that still will not create a long-term customer. That should be your goal with each client, how can I continuously provide this person with something so great they will remain a customer of mine as long as they live.
Professional marketers have at least 10 products or services to offer their clients. The relationship they establish with their customer (the relationship is everything) usually lasts at least one year, but satisfied customers stay with them much longer.
3. Speaking of the relationship, how often do you communicate with your prospects and customers? Please don’t say less than once a month. If you are doing that there is not a relationship. If you are contacting them more than once a month you are doing a little better, and this is a good number for people on your list, but that haven’t bought yet.
Well if they are a customer, you can bet any professional marketer will contact them more often than once a week. You don’t need to question it, it works.
4. How fast has your business been growing this year? Your business should be growing at a rate of about 35%-100% per year.
If you are starting out in your fist year in network marketing most of your time should be spent learning, so your numbers might be a little lower, but if you have been at this over a year your business should be thriving and growing. The best of the best often can double their numbers year after year.
5. What is the end goal of your network marketing or on-line business? This is one most people have never though about. Well they should because why did you start something you had no idea how you wanted to finish? Well you only have a couple of options.
The first, sadly, is that your business ends up making little to no money becuase you did not follow any of the previous advice in this article and you close up shop and tell everyone you meet that network marketing is a pyramid scheme.
The second is that you plan to continuously grow your network marketing business and keep running it as long as it is profitable. Not a bad idea as long as you absolutely love your business, have tons of ideas for it, and you want to limit your income to only your business.
The third option is that you would, at some point, like to sell the business, sell part of it, or take it public. Each these options is great for you to make a lot of money, just depends on how big you want to go and how professional your network marketing business is.
Most people’s businesses are the size of their thoughts and goals. Don’t belittle yourself by your goals, set goals that would blow your mind if you achieved them. What is the difference between Microsoft and your local mom and pop store? Thoughts and goals.

At Last! How You Can Take Your Internet Business To the Next Level By Mike Dillard

One of my biggest mentors in internet business, netweork marketing and personal development held a top secret meeting for 40 of the world’s best internet marketers in an un-assuming hotel room in San Diego.
We’re talking about the gorillas like John Reese, Frank Kern, Yanik Silver, John Carlton, Joe Polish, Mike Filsaime, the ‘Rich Jerk’, Jeff Walker, and Rich Schefren just to name a few. It felt kinda like a mafia movie where all the families gather in a secluded safe-house to hear the god father speak his peace. It was definitely an honor to be in such company. |
So why were we invited to this little gathering, and why did we drop everything on our schedule to make sure we were in attendance?
Well we need to travel back in time, so when you’re ready, punch the accelerator on the Delorean to 88 MPH and set the year of destination to 2001.
Six years ago, a young guy living in an un-assuming apartment in California trying to find his path in life took his first step into the world of internet marketing.
His name was David DeAngelo. Like most of us, he began by writing a little e-book and putting up a simple lead capture page.
It did well, and before he knew it, he was making a full-time income from his little internet business. Now that’s where most people’s internet marketing careers would begin and end. Their level of desire and ambition peaked at a few $1,000 extra per month.
But not with David. Truth be told, he’s an intellectual freak show.
But the best part is that his intelligence was not graced upon him at birth “Doogie Houser” style… It was gained word-by-word and page-by-page thanks to his insatiable appetite for reading (Hint Hint).
That willingness to acquire new knowledge, combined with an expanding vision for himself and his little company would create a chain reaction of events that would lead myself and 39 others into that hotel room 6 years later and the story would be told all over the internet.
Now hop back in your Delorean and head back to the future. Today, David DeAngelo Communications Inc. has grown from his tiny apartment bedroom into an internet marketing power-house that is revolutionizing the concept of the “virtual company.”
Sales of his little ebook and education courses for men on “dating” exceed $20,000,000 per year. That’s more than $70,000 per day!
His little capture page has helped them build an email list with millions of subscribers. The company’s view on hiring talent and company structure are revolutionary when you consider they have 80 full-time employees, without an office.
Yes, it’s a $20,000,00+ company that’s completely virtual and a cutting-edge example studied by Fortune 500 companies around the world.
Quite a story isn’t it? Well here’s where it gets real interesting… “David DeAngelo” does not exist. It’s a fictitious name created by the person we’re really talking about here in order to allow him to build his empire in secret.
People have been trying to discover his true identity for years, usually without success. He’s never taught internet marketing, he’s never held a training event or seminar on his business, and despite the fact that he’s one of the most successful internet marketers in the world, you’ve never heard his name before on any marketing websites.
As far as anyone was concerned, he was a ghost. I had been watching and studying his team for a year or two, but met him personally for the first time in that San Diego hotel room.
I’ll have to admit that I awaited his 2-day presentation with baited-breath, as he was going to reveal how he turned his little bedroom internet business into the $20,000,000 giant
it is today.
I hope it’s now painfully obvious as to why the 40 of us dropped everything we were doing to attend this secret meeting with just a few days notice.
You see, despite our internet marketing success, most of us in that room were “stuck.” We began as employees years ago, conjuring our businesses into reality in apartment bedroom’s late at night just like he had, but few of us were truly “business owners”.
We had mastered some valuable skills and marketing online, but most of us had… Never hired anyone before. Never fired anyone before.
We didn’t know how to build a long-term strategy for our company. We didn’t understand how to take the power of branding and positioning to the next level.
We didn’t know how to tap into the massive internet marketing channels used by corporate America. And we didn’t know how to recruit talented individuals that would help take our businesses to new heights.
For the most part, we we’re all running one-man-shows with the help of a customer service agent or secretary, and at a complete loss for “what comes next”.
In the end, it simply comes down to the fact that you simply do not know, what you do not know. So in essence, we didn’t know how to take it to the next level. He did. And that weekend was a major wake-up call for everyone.
Those two days completely revolutionized my business and the tangible results will become apparent to everyone within the next 30 days. Find yourself someone who is much better at what you do than you are. Get to know and learn from them, you might become as good, if not better than they are.
